PTSD - What is it and how can Hypnotherapy help

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops after a person has experienced a traumatic event or a series of traumatic events.

PTSD can occur at any age and symptoms may manifest within the first month following the traumatic event but for some, these symptoms can be delayed for months thereafter, and occasionally, even for years.

Some symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Insomnia

  • Nightmares

  • Lack of focus

  • Emotional detachment

  • Social isolation

  • Self-destructive behaviours

  • Irritability

  • Mistrust of others

A repeated traumatic event such as sexual abuse during childhood can have long term devastating effects on a person if left unhealed. This is often referred to as complex PTSD.

Hypnotherapy provides solution-orientated treatment. During hypnosis, the mind is more active and open. With the use of relaxation, guided imagery, and supportive hypnotic suggestions, the hypnotherapy practitioner may help their client shift feelings or beliefs to better manage certain symptoms of trauma.

Hypnotherapy is extremely effective with a great many conditions and especially for those who would benefit from deep relaxation in a safe, supportive environment.

Certain studies have shown hypnotherapy to be helpful in the treatment of trauma symptoms, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can also be used in conjunction with other healing modalities such as CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy).

One key message to remember is that hypnotherapy for PTSD is not about erasing the trauma but healing it.
